SURGE PROTECTION

Sophisticated electronic technology is commonplace in virtually every home today. This sensitive electronic equipment can be damaged by power surges. The average Canadian home experiences more than 2000 surges of varying size every year.
Causes
There are external and internal power surges. External ones are caused by lightning, nearby industries and power outages. Internal ones, however, account for more than half of all power surges. These surges originate from electrical equipment inside the home. When fridges, air conditioning units and other motorized appliances start and stop, they create small surges that occur many of times throughout the day.
Effects
Large external power surges can instantly destroy electronic equipment; fortunately these external surges are rare.
Slowly, over time, low-level internal surges can degrade electronic circuitry. Often you are not aware occurring until the equipment or devices begins to perform poorly or fail completely.
Power Surge Protection and Prevention
The easiest way to protect against power surges is to unplug devices when they are not in use; however, in today’s reality, this is not a practical solution. The best way to protect your devices is to invest in surge protection for the whole house. We offer a two-stage approach:
Stage 1 Primary Protection: A hard-wired surge protection device is installed at the entry point of your electricity, telephone and cable utility lines.
These devices work by preventing large external surges from entering your home through utility lines.

Stage 2 Secondary Protection
:
A surge strip is installed at the point of use. This incorporates electric, telephone and coaxial protection. These units protect against internal surges and provide secondary protection against external ones.

Some Facts & Figures
·         The average home is hit with up to 20 spikes a day.
·         You get up to 30% more life out of your appliances and electronic equipment by using surge protection equipment.
·         More than 40% of all computer crashes and data losses are caused by power surges.
·         A power surge that lasts less than 1/100th of a second can carry a range voltage from five to ten volts when you turn on a hairdryer, to thousands of volts when lightning hits an overhead line or transformer.
To fully protect your appliances and electronics the two-stage approach is a must. When used together primary and secondary surge suppressors should protect all your appliances and electronic equipment from all types of surges.
If surge protection for the whole house is taken with any new circuit breaker panel installed by Electrika, a lifetime guarantee will be given with the panel and breakers. Our electricians can customize surge protection to the needs of your home.
